A new feasibility study suggests the Port of Vancouver could support green shipping corridors using low-emission e-methanol fuel. Conducted by Oceans North and U.K.-based Arup, the report outlines a concept for a large-scale e-methanol plant to serve bulk carriers and cruise ships.
Oceans North’s Brent Dancey says the goal is to assess whether Canada can supply its own clean marine fuel. Arup’s Jo Balmer notes e-methanol could cut emissions by 90%, though significant land, water, and electricity would be required. Permitting could take years, but analysts say clean shipping is essential for competitiveness.
