China’s BYD is preparing to sell electric vehicles (EVs) in Canada. Consultants recently updated their registrations to lobby the Canadian government on market entry, business establishment, and tariffs on EVs. Automotive News Canada first reported the move. BYD, which has surpassed Tesla as the world’s largest EV maker due to its low-cost models, currently builds buses in Ontario but lacks a presence in the Canadian passenger car market.
This potential entry comes as Canada considers matching U.S. tariffs on Chinese EVs. Ottawa began a 30-day consultation on potential tariffs on July 2, discussing how to close loopholes allowing Chinese automakers into the U.S. market.
