Photonic Raises $180M to Scale Quantum Systems

Photonic has raised $180 million in the first close of a new funding round, advancing its bid to commercialize distributed quantum computing. The round was led by Planet First Partners, with new backing from RBC and TELUS and continued support from BCI and Microsoft, bringing total funding to $375 million.

Photonic’s Entanglement First™ Architecture combines silicon qubits and photonic networking to enable scalable, fault-tolerant systems. The capital will fund product milestones, hiring, and partnerships. CEO Paul Terry cited growing confidence across finance, telecom, and sustainability. The Coquitlam firm also joined Canada’s Quantum Champions Program.

Ottawa Backs Four Firms in Quantum Computing Push

Canada has launched the Canadian Quantum Champions Program to anchor domestic leadership in quantum computing, selecting four firms for up to $23 million each in initial funding. The recipients are Montreal-based Anyon Systems, Sherbrooke’s Nord Quantique, Coquitlam-based Photonic, and Toronto-based Xanadu.

Ottawa has pledged additional funding if the technologies perform as promised. Nord Quantique, Photonic, and Xanadu are also participating in a U.S. program offering up to US$316 million by 2033, raising concerns about corporate migration. AI Minister Evan Solomon said CQCP ensures companies can compete globally while remaining headquartered in Canada.

Photonic to Invest $49M in UK Quantum Facility

Vancouver-based Photonic is investing over $49 million to establish a new quantum R&D facility in the United Kingdom, marking a significant step in its global expansion strategy. The site will create more than 30 technical jobs and enhance collaboration between Canada and the UK in secure quantum technologies.

Core operations will remain in Canada, but the UK investment will boost market access and innovation. Canadian and British officials hailed the move as a milestone for transatlantic cooperation in advanced computing. Photonic is backed by BCI, Inovia Capital, Amadeus, and the UK’s NSSIF.

TELUS Backs Photonic in Canadian Quantum Communication Push

TELUS has partnered with Coquitlam-based Photonic to advance quantum communication in Canada. Under this collaboration, TELUS will offer Photonic exclusive access to its fibre-optic network, facilitating tests for quantum innovations.

Photonic, a leader in quantum technology, aims to strengthen data security across industries by utilizing TELUS’ infrastructure. This project includes a 30-km fibre network in British Columbia, advancing quantum encryption, key distribution, and computing. The collaboration, the first of its kind in Canada, marks a significant move towards a quantum-secure future.
