Alberta’s AI Buildout Could Face 5,200-Worker Shortfall

October 27, 2026 by Newsdesk

Alberta could be short approximately 5,200 construction and skilled trades workers if 80% of its proposed AI data centre capacity gets built within a decade. Research from the Information and Communications Technology Council, commissioned by the province, highlights workforce constraints behind Alberta’s infrastructure ambitions. Extending that buildout to 15 years would reduce the projected shortage to 2,227 workers.

Simultaneous projects could compete with hospitals, transit construction, and oil and gas facilities for talent, pushing wages higher. ICTC recommends stronger trades pipelines, expanded training, and Indigenous workforce pathways, underscoring that delivering AI infrastructure depends on people as well as power and capital.

October 26, 2026 by Newsdesk

Montréal- and Boston-based DropGenie has added BDC Capital’s Thrive Fund to its seed-plus financing, bringing the round to US$5 million.

Led by Skeleton Key, the financing also includes Merck Global Health Innovation Fund, CQDM, Real Ventures, and Anges Québec.

Canadian Researchers Put Wildfire Mapping on Fast Forward

October 23, 2026 by Newsdesk

Montréal’s Mila and Natural Resources Canada have developed an AI model to map wildfire hazards faster than existing simulation tools.

The system estimates an area’s likelihood of burning, potential fire spread, and intensity. Mila says it runs between 800 and 3,400 times faster than the federal BurnP3+ simulator, depending on computing hardware.

Trained on fire simulation maps, the model can produce hazard estimates within hours instead of months.

Researchers emphasize that its outputs remain approximations. Still, faster mapping could help planners assess changing conditions as Canada faces increasingly severe wildfire risks, demonstrating a practical application of domestically developed artificial intelligence.
