The Canadian government has announced a $59.9 million investment into IBM’s $1 billion expansion of its semiconductor packaging plant in Bromont, Quebec. This financing comes from the federal Strategic Innovation Fund, supporting a $226.5-million development to expand IBM’s facility and develop quantum technologies with Centre de Collaboration MiQro Innovation. Quebec will also contribute, providing $40 million, including a $30-million forgivable loan for equipment.
IBM’s Bromont facility is the largest in North America for semiconductor packaging, a crucial late stage in chip manufacturing. This expansion is part of Canada’s strategy to participate in reshoring chip supply chains. With new semiconductor foundries emerging across the U.S., the demand for packaging is growing. IBM’s $1-billion investment will cover capital and operating costs over the next five years.
