Canadians Express Concern Over AI and Misinformation Ahead of Elections

July 10, 2024 by Newsdesk

A new CIRA poll reveals Canadians’ growing concerns over generative AI and misinformation, with 51% expressing unease about AI technology and only 17% showing excitement. Key worries include the spread of fake images or videos (69%), mis/disinformation (67%), and insufficient regulations (65%).

As national elections approach, CIRA president Byron Holland emphasizes the need for vigilance in identifying AI-generated misinformation. The survey also found that 51% of Canadians lack confidence in detecting online fraud, a significant drop from 67% in 2023. The findings, detailed in CIRA’s 2024 Canada’s Internet Factbook, underscore the critical role of credible news sources.
