Online News Act Spurs Tech Giants to Eliminate News for Canadian Users

June 22, 2023 by Newsdesk

Following the Senate’s approval of the Online News Act, Meta announced the removal of news content from Facebook and Instagram for all Canadian users.

The act, also known as Bill C-18, compels tech giants like Facebook and Google to share revenues with publishers.

Facebook expressed compliance with the legislation, leading to the unavailability of news outlets’ content on its platforms.

Meanwhile, talks between Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez and Google are underway to determine whether Google will take similar action.

Canadians may witness news content disappearing from their Google searches.
