Shell Canada Products has announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for Polaris, a carbon capture project at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park, Scotford, Alberta. Polaris aims to capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from Shell’s Scotford refinery and chemicals complex near Edmonton.
Additionally, Shell has greenlit the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub in partnership with ATCO EnPower, which will store CO2 from Polaris. Shell’s Huibert Vigeveno highlighted the importance of these projects in meeting Paris Agreement climate goals. Building on the success of the Quest facility, Polaris and Atlas are set to begin operations by late 2028.
