Ottawa-headquartered Shopify has settled legal cases against two individuals for harassing merchants on its platform. Revealed by General Counsel Jess Hertz on LinkedIn, these lawsuits in U.S. district courts last year accused the individuals of making false DMCA complaints to harm competitors.
Shopify, receiving thousands of DMCA notices monthly, faces a rise in their misuse. CEO Tobi Lütke introduced a reporting tool in December to mitigate this issue, part of a broader strategy against such abuses, including patent trolls. A third ongoing DMCA case shows Shopify’s commitment to protecting its merchants from malicious activities.
