Toronto’s Taalas raises US$50M to build AI model-specific chips

Emerging from stealth mode, Taalas has announced its successful fundraising, spearheaded by San Francisco’s Quiet Capital and Pierre Lamond of Eclipse.

The Toronto company is at the forefront of developing advanced chips specifically designed for deep-learning models, embedding these models directly into the hardware. This innovation is poised to challenge industry giants like Nvidia by focusing on specialized, high-performance semiconductors for AI applications.

Taalas is set to begin sales of its large language model chip in the next year, signaling a significant advancement in AI technology. CEO Ljubisa Bajic, co-founder of Tenstorrent, brings a wealth of experience in AI chip development, enhancing Taalas’ potential impact in various industries, including automotive and consumer electronics.
