Bioform Technologies Advances Bio-based Plastics with $5M Investment

April 24, 2024 by Newsdesk

Bioform Technologies, a UBC spin-off, has secured a $5 million seed investment from Suzano Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Suzano, the world’s largest market pulp producer. This funding will accelerate Bioform’s development of bio-based plastic alternatives using wood pulp-reinforced hydrogels. Suzano’s wood pulp fiber serves as a key input.

These plastic alternatives can be composted or recycled through existing paper recycling systems without relying on fossil-based inputs. Bioform aims to produce sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics with similar or better performance than conventional plastics. CEO Chris Clark said the funding will help build a demonstration facility and expand their team.
