Former OMERS Exec Exits High-Profile Cleantech Venture

Damien Steel has stepped down as CEO of Deep Sky, the Quebec-based carbon removal startup founded by Hopper CEO Frederic Lalonde. Steel, previously managing partner at OMERS Ventures, joined Deep Sky in August 2023. In a LinkedIn post, he cited personal reasons, stating he could no longer give the role his full energy.

Chief operating officer Alex Petre will take over. Deep Sky focuses on direct-air and ocean-based carbon capture. Last year, it secured major deals with RBC and Microsoft, and a US$40 million grant from Breakthrough Energy. Questions remain about the scalability of its technology.

Quebec’s Deep Sky Secures $40M Grant for Carbon Removal

Quebec-based Deep Sky has secured a $40 million USD grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, marking Catalyst’s first investment in Canada and in direct air capture (DAC) technology.

The funding supports Deep Sky Alpha, a DAC testing facility set to open by Spring 2025. The facility will trial multiple carbon removal technologies to identify scalable, cost-effective solutions for high-quality carbon credits.

CEO Damien Steel hailed the grant as a milestone for Deep Sky and the carbon removal industry, while Catalyst’s Mario Fernandez praised its potential to drive real-world innovation. Deep Sky aims to position Canada as a leader in carbon removal.

Deep Sky Sells Carbon Credits to RBC and Microsoft

Deep Sky, a Canadian carbon removal developer, has secured founding buyers RBC and Microsoft for carbon removal credits, supporting its commitment to remove 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ over ten years. Deep Sky Labs, Canada’s first direct air capture (DAC) center, will host eight DAC technologies to test and optimize their performance under real-world conditions.

Deep Sky Selects Alberta for World’s First Carbon Removal Innovation Centre

Canadian developer Deep Sky has chosen Innisfail, Alberta for the world’s first carbon removal innovation and commercialization centre, Deep Sky Labs. Located an hour north of Calgary, the site aims to accelerate scalable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies to produce high integrity carbon credits.

The facility, operational this winter, will capture 3,000 tons of CO2 annually using up to 10 different technologies. Partnered with engineering firm BBA, the project will employ 80 construction workers and 15 annual operations staff, infusing $110M into the local economy over 10 years. This initiative marks Canada’s first commercial direct air capture project.

Deep Sky Secures $57.5M to Make Canada Carbon Removal Capital

Montréal’s Deep Sky, a carbon-capture startup, has secured $57.5 million in Series A funding, and aims to position Canada as the “carbon removal capital of the world.”

Co-led by Brightspark Ventures and Whitecap Venture Partners, with notable investments from Investissement Québec and others, this round, along with a $17.7 million seed note, totals the young company’s funding at $75 million.

Founded in 2022 by Hopper co-founders, Deep Sky plans to use the funds to construct its first commercial facility and develop software for carbon credit sales, leveraging Eastern Canada’s hydroelectric energy for large-scale carbon removal.

Deep Sky and Mission Zero Partner To Deploy Direct Air Capture Carbon Removal in Canada

Montreal-based Deep Sky and London’s Mission Zero Technologies join forces, set to deploy groundbreaking Direct Air Capture (DAC) facilities in Canada.
