Canadian Influencers in U.S. Brace for TikTok Ban

January 17, 2025 by Newsdesk

Canadian content creators in the U.S. face uncertainty as the potential TikTok ban threatens their livelihoods. Influencers like Jess McKay and Ryan Robinson-Hatton, who rely heavily on TikTok for brand deals, are bracing for income losses. TikTok claims creators could lose nearly USD $300 million monthly if banned.

Many Canadian influencers moved to the U.S. for better monetization opportunities unavailable in Canada. The ban could severely impact creators without diversified platforms. While some, like Dan Rodo, have backup incomes, others anticipate financial hardship.

TikTok Appeals National Security Shutdown in Federal Court

December 12, 2024 by Newsdesk

TikTok Canada is appealing a federal order to shut its Canadian offices, arguing Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s decision was both procedurally unfair and unsupported by evidence. The November directive, citing unspecified national security concerns, came without dialogue despite TikTok’s offers to address issues, the company claimed in a Federal Court filing.

If upheld, the closure will affect hundreds of employees, cancel over 250,000 ad deals, and harm Canadian creators, TikTok warned. While Champagne has declined to disclose specific security concerns, TikTok is seeking judicial review to prevent the shutdown.

Canada Orders TikTok to Shut Down Canadian Operations

Ontario School Boards Sue Social Media Giants Over Student Well-Being

March 29, 2024 by Newsdesk

Four of Ontario’s largest school boards are taking legal action against the parent companies of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, alleging these social media platforms disrupt student learning and contribute to mental health issues.

The Toronto District School Board, Peel District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board, and Ottawa-Carleton District School Board filed cases in Ontario’s Superior Court, seeking over $4 billion in damages. They claim the platforms’ designs promote compulsive use, impacting students’ attention and learning, and causing schools to allocate substantial resources for dealing with these issues.

The lawsuit aims to hold these companies accountable and secure resources for addressing these educational challenges.
