Canada’s AI Workforce Demand Rises Amid Global Competition

A new report by the Vector Institute, in collaboration with the Conference Board of Canada and the Future Skills Centre, reveals a 37% increase in demand for core AI skills since 2018, focusing on fields like machine learning and AI ethics. Demand for peripheral skills, however, dropped by 46.4% as automation tools replace them.

The report emphasizes Canada’s need to strengthen AI education, R&D investment, and governance to retain its talent edge. Alain Francq of the Conference Board warns that slow AI adoption could hinder Canada’s competitiveness, while Noel Baldwin of Future Skills underscores the importance of lifelong learning.

CIBC Deepens Commitment to Advancing, Adoption A.I.

CIBC announced a strengthening of its relationship with the Vector Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing the field of AI through research and application since inception in 2017. The enhanced partnership furthers CIBC’s commitment to the AI ecosystem, according to a Dave Gillespie, who serves as Executive Vice President of Infrastructure, Architecture, and Modernization at CIBC.

Ontario Supports Vector Institute and Ontario Centre of Innovation with $77 Million Funding

The Ontario government has announced an investment of up to $77 million in two projects aimed at fostering the adoption and development of critical technologies in the province. The funding will be allocated to the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI).

Through the Critical Technology Initiatives program, OCI will receive up to $50 million to launch innovative programming benefiting small and medium-sized businesses in sectors such as mining, agri-food, and advanced manufacturing.

The Vector Institute will receive up to $27 million to facilitate collaborations between companies and AI experts, accelerating the responsible adoption of ethical AI.
