Calgary Lands Canada’s First XPRIZE Hub

Calgary has been named home to Canada’s first XPRIZE Hub, hosted by the University of Calgary and supported by a $1.5 million investment from the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund. The hub will serve as a national innovation centre aligned with global counterparts in Glasgow and Geneva.

XPRIZE, renowned for breakthrough competitions in space and climate, will use the Calgary hub to foster Canadian entrepreneurship, research, and collaboration. The four-year agreement aims to support startups, train innovators, and host global events—advancing Calgary’s role as Canada’s innovation capital and deepening its impact on the global stage.

XPRIZE Partners with CDL for $100M Carbon Removal Initiative

XPRIZE has chosen Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) as its strategic partner for the $100 million Carbon Removal prize, funded by the Musk Foundation. This competition has sparked a new carbon dioxide removal (CDR) industry, with over 1,300 global teams, half formed specifically for this challenge. Teams must remove 1,000 net tonnes of CO2 in the final year, aiming for gigatonne scale by 2050.

Anousheh Ansari, CEO of XPRIZE, emphasized the partnership’s potential to foster groundbreaking carbon removal solutions. CDL’s global streams will integrate these efforts as XPRIZE-CDL Carbon Removal ventures.
