TELUS has opened Canada’s first fully sovereign AI factory in Rimouski, Quebec. Powered by NVIDIA GPUs and HPE infrastructure, the facility keeps sensitive data within Canadian-controlled data centres, marking a milestone for technological independence. CEO Darren Entwistle said the factory ensures businesses and governments no longer rely on foreign-controlled systems for AI.
The factory enables model training, fine-tuning, and deployment for Canadian enterprises. Federal AI Minister Evan Solomon called it a key step in national competitiveness, while NVIDIA and HPE leaders said the initiative strengthens Canada’s digital sovereignty. A Kamloops site is planned next.
