Canada’s Mining Output is Not on Par with the Nation’s Electric Vehicle Ambitions

August 15, 2024 by Newsdesk

Canada’s production of nickel and copper has declined for four consecutive years, raising concerns as the country aims to aggressively boost critical mineral output to support its electric vehicle battery industry. Yet despite government goals to massively increase mining by 2035, S&P Global Market Intelligence found that mineral exploration budgets dropped by 9% last year.

Challenges include long timelines for mine development (18 years, above the global average) as well as global competition, particularly from Chinese-owned nickel companies. Industry leaders suggest streamlining the permitting process and aligning policies with U.S. incentives to overcome hurdles.

‘Cadence’ Consortium Aims to Connect Major Canadian Cities via Electric Rail

August 9, 2024 by Newsdesk

Air Canada has entered the race to develop a high-frequency electric rail linking Ontario and Québec, joining a consortium called Cadence. The ambitious project, which could cost up to $12 billion, aims to connect major cities like Toronto, Ottawa, and Montréal.

The move indicates Air Canada’s acknowledgment of the growing importance of high-speed rail transit, which could impact its short-haul flight market. In Europe, Air Canada has already partnered with rail operators to offer combined air-rail tickets, reflecting a broader strategy to adapt to changing transportation trends. However, concerns have been raised by advocacy group Transport Action Canada about potential conflicts of interest.

Canada’s Electric Vehicle Sector May Be in Some Trouble, Leaked Document Shows

August 8, 2024 by Newsdesk

Last year, the government of Canada laid down plans to phase out gas-powered motor vehicles within the next decade. They’re building charging stations like crazy in anticipation. This week, however, it has been revealed the nation is grappling with “major gaps” in the supply chain as the transition to electrically powered cars encounters bumps on the road.

Canada has less than half of the mineral production it needs, leaked internal documents show, while lower-than-expected demand for EVs has multiple companies hesitating on plans to expand in the Canadian market. Without more investment, the sector may continue to struggle for viability.

Self-Driving Cars are Already Here. The ‘Next Frontier’ is Self-Charging

July 26, 2024 by Newsdesk

Pennsylvania startup InductEV, which makes wireless charging pads for vehicles, is seeking to enter the Canadian market through partnerships, such as an emerging collaboration with Toronto’s Ramco, an electrical contractor.

It is one example of Canada being a “perfect fit” for the deployment of self-charging electric vehicles, according to one expert in the field, who anticipates trial deployments of such technology as soon as next year. The country’s opportunity to be “a new frontier” for this innovation lies at the intersection of major bus makers like Nova Bus and Lion Electric, idle-heavy routes, and a climate that negatively impacts battery performance.
