Rogers Extends NHL Rights in $7.7B Deal

April 1, 2025 by Newsdesk

Rogers Communications has secured exclusive NHL broadcasting rights in Canada for US$7.7 billion, extending its grip on the league through a new 12-year agreement, according to Sportico and the Associated Press. The deal follows Rogers’ landmark $5.2B acquisition in 2013, which displaced the CBC. The current agreement expires after next season.

Shares fell 6.5% Tuesday, as Rogers contends with growing debt and flat 2025 revenue forecasts. The telecom giant recently spent $4.7B to buy Bell’s stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, ensuring Leafs broadcast profits stay in-house rather than aiding a rival.

NHL Debuts Apple Watch for Referees at Stadium Series

February 28, 2025 by Newsdesk

The NHL will debut a new Apple Watch-based officiating tool at the 2025 Stadium Series this weekend, enhancing game management and safety. Developed with Presidio, the NHL Watch Comms App provides haptic notifications for key moments, such as penalty expirations and period countdowns, ensuring officials stay aware without disrupting play.

The system, which has been field-tested since last season, aims to reduce on-ice collisions and improve decision-making efficiency. With 92.5% of NHL officials voluntarily adopting the tech, the league sees this innovation as a major step forward in officiating accuracy.
